Classic Old Timer sandwich from Krema
PB&J-inspired eats around Columbus
The peanut butter and jelly sandwich has staying power.
It was a mainstay of our childhood lunchboxes and, as adults, we frequently turn to it for an easy meal. But for those who seek a twist on tradition, there are a variety of savory and sweet takes on this staple sandwich.
Peanut Butter & Banana, Melt Bar and Grilled
Melt’s gargantuan sandwich includes caramelized banana, house-made peanut butter, sweet cream cheese, candied peanuts and a mixed berry preserves dipping sauce. The restaurant, with locations in the Short North and Easton, offers a creative and crunchy spin on the PB, B and J.
Any sandwich on the menu, Krema Nut Company
You can’t write a story about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches without including Krema Nut Company, located in Grandview Heights. Try the peanut butter and jelly milkshake, or choose from a sandwich menu that weds nut butters with fruit preserves, fresh fruit, marshmallow fluff, cream cheese and Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread.
Gourmet PB & J, Bodega
Featuring Krema peanut butter, Bodega’s sandwich also incorporates spiced king berry preserves and candied bacon for a truly gourmet experience. The Short North restaurant offers them for a discounted $2 apiece on Wednesdays.
P-B-B & J, The Pint Room
For a true union of salty and sweet, there’s this member of Dublin-based Pint Room’s lengthy burger menu. It features sea salted peanut butter, candied bacon, Ohio Monterey Jack cheese, strawberry preserves and fresh strawberry slices.
The Houndog, The Angry Wiener
The Houndog is yet another example of a peanut butter and jelly inspired product made better by the addition of bacon. The Columbus food truck earns extra points, however, for featuring it as a jam. That and – you guessed it – peanut butter are the two toppings for this hot dog.
Spicy PB&J, OH! Burgers
This food truck’s burger is not for the faint of heart. Two ounces of ground beef is topped with spicy apricot jelly, peanut butter and bacon.
PB & J Smoothie, Alchemy Juice Café
If you’re looking for something refreshing, this smoothie from Alchemy in Olde Towne East might quench your thirst. With grapes, natural peanut butter, hemp seeds and house-made almond milk, this take on the peanut butter and jelly duo is a sure bet for those seeking a more healthful choice.
