You won’t have to move to New York or Los Angeles to make it as an artist anymore.
In fact, neither city was included in the list of the top 10 cities for creatives that was recently put out by Smart Asset, a website that specializes in giving financial advice. Columbus ranked sixth, and most of the cities in the top 10 were located in the South or the Midwest.
The only coastal city that did make the list was Durham, N.C.
According to statistics gathered by Smart Asset, there are slightly more than 76 creatives per every 10,000 workers in Columbus. Columbus’ plethora of universities is one of the things that makes it such a good city for creative professionals. There’s Ohio State, of course, but Columbus also has private universities such as Capital University, community colleges such as Columbus State, and art schools such as Columbus College of Art and Design.
Columbus is also home to eight museums, including the Columbus Museum of Art, which will be opening a new wing in fall.
The city that Smart Asset found to be the best place for creative professionals was New Orleans, La., with a stunning 161 creatives per every 10,000 workers. New Orleans is known for its active music scene, and while it remains a great city for musicians, the current largest creative profession in the city is actually acting.
Smart Asset looked at 28 different creative professions in this study, including everything from graphic designers to writers.
