On May 20 and 21, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 2015-2016 Masterworks Series with Latin Fiesta. The concert will be conducted by CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov.
The program is an homage to tango. The tribute will feature The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by tango master Astor Piazzolla. The piece is a set of four violin concertos. Piazzolla’s work will also be honored by Last Round by composer Osvaldo Golijov. Last Round is a tango-flavored work that was inspired by Piazzolla.
The program will also contain a showpiece by composer Alberto Ginastera. The piece, Variaciones Concertantes, will focus on the orchestra’s principal players. The concert will also include a performance by featured guest Bella Hristova. Hristova is an acclaimed solo violinist who has performed all over the world.
Before the performances, guests are invited to a prelude with Christopher Purdy, a radio broadcaster with WOSU who hosts Classical 101 and the Symphony’s live broadcasts. Purdy will have a 30-minute discussion about the works about to be performed. The preludes will take place in the theatre at 7 p.m.
Attendees are also invited to several postludes following the performances. On Friday night guests may join the musicians at Thurber’s Bar in Westin Hotel. On Saturday night the guests can enjoy tango-demonstrations and sample Argentinean wine.
Latin Fiesta will be performed in the Southern Theatre on Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $10. Those ages 13-25 can purchase $5 all access tickets. Tickets can be purchased at the CAPA Ticket Center by phone or through Ticketmaster.
