Accessible Expressions Ohio has been showing off the creativity of Ohio artists with disabilities
since 1996 by going on tour throughout the state each year. The exhibition not only provides an inclusive environment for these artists to display their work, but also raises awareness throughout Ohio.
Next stop for the 2015 exhibition? OSU’s Urban Arts Space in downtown Columbus. Stop by the City Center Gallery and enjoy Accessible Expressions Ohio starting July 2, with an opening reception taking place from 6-8 p.m.
Organized by VSA Ohio, the exhibition features 75 pieces of visual art by artists of all ages and from all parts of the state.
The tour began in March with an opening ceremony at the Westerville Community Center, where awards were presented in multiple categories, including Youth, Emerging and Professional. This year, People’s Choice was awarded to Brady Smalley of Columbus, and Best in Show went to Mary Slisher of Lancaster.
The award-winning pieces are just a small sample of what the exhibition has to offer, but even that small sample features a wide variety of artistic mediums. Whether they are showing something through a camera lens or on a fabric collage, these artists prove that the challenges they have to overcome on a daily basis have not stifled their passion and talent for their craft.
Urban Arts space is a free and accessible location, and is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m.-6 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays until 8 p.m.. The art will be on display through July 23.
