You don’t have to travel far to get a taste of Broadway in Columbus. Here’s a countdown of our top five locations in the city that cater to fans of the Great White Way.
5. Club Diversity, the Brewery District, 863 S. High St.
Club Diversity doesn’t specialize in showstoppers, but if you go on a Thursday night, you’ll run into pianist Tom Crumley, who plays an array of music, including showtunes.
Broadway isn’t just about musicals. While CATCO occasionally presents musicals, such as the Tony-award winning [title of show], they’re also known for their plays. Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man, recently revived on Broadway, opens up CATCO’s 2015-16 season.
3. Wall Street Nightclub, 144 N. Wall St.
Wall Street Nightclub is a regular spot for shows staged by Columbus-based theater group Imagine Productions. Imagine Productions has a history of performing a mix of Broadway classics and contemporary favorites, such as RENT and Spring Awakening. Their 2015-16 features Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and Heathers, among others.
2. Short North Stage, 1187 N. High St.
Like Imagine Productions, Short North Stage offers classics along with some edgier productions, as well. Past seasons have included the likes of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Cabaret and A Chorus Line. The 2015-16 season kicks off with Sondheim classic A Little Night Music, known for its emotional number “Send in the Clowns.”
1. Union Café, 782 N. High St.
To those of you counting down the days until your next trip to New York City’s showtunes-themed piano bar Marie’s Crisis, don’t despair. At Union Café’s Showtunes Sundays, you can sing along to your favorite showstoppers while enjoying dinner and a drink. The evening starts at 6 p.m. on Sundays – and you can even text your requests, and the videos will be played across the bar. Anything from Barbra Streisand’s Funny Girl to The Book of Mormon is at your disposal.
