Columbus Symphony visits The Wizard of Oz

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra presents “Oz with Orchestra” at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 at the Ohio Theatre, 39 E. State St. The show will have audience members saying "I don’t think we’re in Columbus anymore ..."

This performance consists of a full screening of the restored film The Wizard of Oz on a large screen while the CSO provides the live soundtrack on the stage underneath. This is not the first time the orchestra has put on a “Symphonic Night at the Movies” performance, having complemented movie soundtracks such as Phantom of the Opera and Lost World in previous seasons.

“(This show) is essentially adding a visual component to the symphonic performance,” says Susan Rosenstock, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra's general manager. “’Oz with Orchestra appeals to viewers of all ages. There will be families who love the movie and want a new experience, people who remember the movie from their childhood and want to introduce their children to it, and maybe even some people seeing the film for the first time.”

The show’s time was made earlier than the usual 8 p.m. start time specifically to be more family-friendly.

The symphony will be directed by Conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos, who has worked with the Queens Symphony and the Chatham Opera. The CSO chose Kitsopoulos because of his experience and reputation.

“We strive to bring people the best possible music experience,” says Rosenstock.

In its 58th season, the CSO is focused on keeping the art of music alive and staying true to the artistic form.

“Live symphonic music is different from just listening to music on an iPod; more artistic,” says Roland Valliere, president and CEO of the CSO. “We want seeing (the Columbus Symphony Orchestra) to be a compelling and one-of-a-kind music experience.”

Tickets range from $18-$64 and are half price for children. To purchase tickets call the box office at 614-228-8600 or visit www.columbussymphony.com.
