Anyone who understands design knows that color can make all the difference in a room.
The tricky part, then, is knowing which colors make sense.
“When painting, there really is no right or wrong color,” says Bill Sutkin, owner of Hilliard-based Home Sweet Home Custom Painting. “It just depends on what color the person wants.”
Using Colors Effectively
Every color must be looked at in terms of its relationship to other colors and certain room accessories.
“When choosing a color, think about the atmosphere you want to have in the room,” says Sher Sagar of Sher Sagar Interior Design.
The monochromatic color scheme seen in the Pura Vida palette is the easiest scheme to use in a room, Sagar says.
“With a monochromatic color scheme, you could add a pop of contrast,” she says. “You could add a juicy pink pillow to a grey color to add drama to a monochromatic room.”

Useful Grey: A neutral color that offers a good deal of freedom in room decoration.
Accessories such as linen drapes or a throw or Swarovski crystal pillows can add contrast and textures to cream and white colors.
With colors in the Nouveau Narrative scheme, consider raw materials such as woven fabrics or reclaimed wood furniture, as the scheme provides a natural feel. This scheme also works well in the kitchen on oil-rubbed bronze, honed or leather-topped granite countertops.
The Trajectory color scheme is good for an office setting, and the Mas Amor Por Favor scheme can be matched with neutral colors on interior features, such as white countertops or white or black cabinets, or even mid-century modern or 1970s retro furniture. Sagar says these colors can be drawn from a piece of art or a stylish rug.
“With the Mas Amor Por Favor color scheme, you can make one color dominate and have two others as accents, providing a 60-30-10 balance,” Sagar says.
