Four eclectic singing groups from the area are joining forces Feb.20-21 for the Columbus A Cappella Fest, at Bexley High School's Schottenstein Theatre, 326 S. Cassingham Rd, Bexley.
The event includes the Columbus Children's Choir, the Bexley High School Vocal Ensemble, the Capital University Chordsmen and the Scioto Valley Chorus. All groups will perform without instrumental or background music of any kind.
Headlining the fest is nationally-acclaimed vocal quartet The GrooveBarbers. This professional foursome recently completed a starring role on the airwaves as “The Astelins” in national television commercials for Astelin prescription nasal spray.
The GrooveBarbers formed in the late 1990’s. Three of the members – tenor Sean Altman, bass Charlie Evett (a Cleveland native), and high tenor Steve Keyes of Columbus – were founding members of the pioneering a cappella band ROCKAPELLA. After these three moved on to their next careers, they met up with vocal music guru Kevin Weist in New York City, and The GrooveBarbers, www.groovebarbers.com, were born.
The unique vocal festival was conceived by Children’s Choir Director, Dr. Sandra Mathias; Capital Chordsmen Director, Dr. C. Andrew Blosser; Bexley High School Choral Director, Amy Johnston Blosser; and GrooveBarbers’ co-founder Steve Keyes of Columbus.
As these four were seeking one final group to include on the bill, they learned about recent successes of the Scioto Valley Chorus, and selected them to join in this distinct vocal gathering.
Columbus A Capella Fest will be performed at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 and 3 p.m. Feb. 21. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors and can be purchased before the show by contacting the Columbus Children’s Choir at 614-220-5555.
Proceeds will help support the Columbus Children's Choir and vocal music programs at Bexley High School and Capital University.
