Capital University launches concert series

Capital University will launch a concert series this month in the King-Lincoln District’s historic Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St., continuing its outreach to Columbus neighborhoods.

The concert series will showcase performances by Capital’s Conservatory of Music students and faculty members in a variety of genres, including opera/musical theatre, jazz, contemporary-fusion, MIDI and rock, and a gospel mass performed by the university’s Chapel Choir.

The series opens with three performances of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe by Capital’s Opera/Music Theatre program, under the direction of Mark Baker. Performances dates are 8 p.m. Jan. 29, and Jan. 30, and at 2 p.m. on Jan. 31.

At 3:30 p.m. Feb. 21, , concert-goers will be treated to Jazz with a Capital J, featuring Jazz Consort, under the direction of Mark Flugge; Spectrum, Capital’s faculty jazz ensemble, coordinated by Dr. Michael Cox; and the Big Band, directed by Dr. Lou Fischer.

In its final month, Capital at the Lincoln will celebrate sounds of the new and the traditional with two concerts — one featuring the Conservatory’s contemporary music ensembles and the series finale featuring the sounds of the Capital University Chapel Choir.

Contemporary music will be performed by Fusion Band, with Fischer again directing; MIDI Band, directed by Chad Loughrige; and Rock Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Mark Lochstampfor at 3:30 p.m. March 14.

Chapel Choir, under the direction of Dr. Lynda Hasseler, closes the series the following Sunday, March 28, at 3:30 p.m. with its performance of Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass.

“Giving students the opportunity to perform at a professional concert hall like the Lincoln Theatre provides them with a new learning experience and gives the community easy access to some of the best musicians in the area,” says Rocky Reuter, assistant dean of the Conservatory of Music and School of Communication.

The series also extends existing ties between Capital and the King-Lincoln District, bolstering Capital’s ongoing outreach efforts in area communities. It’s part of a broader university initiative to increase experiential learning opportunities for students while having a positive impact on Central Ohio.

Other projects are under way or being planned in nearby neighborhoods in Columbus and Whitehall.
